The Harbor Springs Depot
111 W. Bay St, Harbor Springs, MI 49740
Historic Waterfront Real Estate

Built in 1889 by the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, the Harbor Springs Depot sits on the waterfront of the deepest inland harbor of the Great Lakes. The depot helped to accommodate freight and passengers being transported by rail and water around the major ports of the Great Lakes. The depot still maintains its original location on the downtown waterfront of Harbor Springs, Michigan, one of the nation’s most unique, exclusive, and breathtaking historical communities.

This exceptional train station was meticulously restored in 2001 and listed on The National Register of Historic Places. It retains original windows, chestnut doors, maple flooring, bead board siding, ticket window iron grates, and over one-hundred years of messages and names carved into the rafters by railroad personnel.

During the renovation, the attic was finished off into a fully furnished 1100 sq. ft. apartment, while the 1900 sq. ft. main floor retains its 14-foot authentic bed board ceilings, aged-patina maple wood floors, original ticket-master bay window, original “baggage area” plank floors, and heavy sliding doors in the Arts & Crafts style. The building is fully insulated, has all new plumbing and electrical systems, and a new heating and air conditioning system that replaced the original wood-burning stove.

The Harbor Springs Depot continues to be a reminder of the original spirit of the entrepreneurs, pioneers, and commerce that were instrumental in the settlement and development of this country. The ambiance, architectural beauty, and the historic value of this unique building have been preserved for the enjoyment of Harbor Springs community and all of its visitors.
